Driver Alejandro Mora, 18, and passengers Caleb Rayan Hampton, 16, Armando Mora, 18, and Christina Hampton, 18, were hospitalized at Shands at the University of Florida with injuries listed as serious. 27. FHP stated in a press release that for an unknown reason, Alejandro Mora failed to negotiate a curve and drove onto the north shoulder of the road.
The driver apparently steered right to avoid a ditch, crossed both lanes of CR 339A and drove onto the south shoulder. His 2000 Ford Ranger rotated counterclockwise, lost traction and overturned two or three times before ending up on its passenger side.
Three of the four injured teens were taken to the hospital by ambulances while one was flown by helicopter.
None of the four were wearing their seatbelts, and Alejandro Mora and Caleb Hampton were ejected when the pickup rolled, FHP Lt. Patrick Riordan said. cheapjerseysshow Riodan added that injuries are often more severe when seatbelts are not worn.
“There is a definite correlation between wearing seatbelts and injuries that are sustained when a vehicle rolls,” Riordan said. “There is clear and convincing evidence that when seatbelts are not worn, injuries will be worse.”
Riordan said that apparently the four had been swimming at an area spring before the accident occurred. The investigation is continuing and charges are pending, FHP said.
